Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and nominations for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was the daughter of an Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage at the time she was eight years old. It means very delicate in Arabic. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10" and was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined with the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of an MC team and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
